  • Even before your baby’s teeth appear, you may begin gently cleaning their gums with a moist cloth.
  • As their first teeth appear, generally between the ages of 4 and 10 months, you can begin using a tiny, soft bristle toothbrush for teeth cleaning.
  • You do not need toothpaste for teeth cleaning at this point, but it is advised that they brush their teeth twice a day.
  • Introduce toothpaste to your child around the age of 18 months, starting with a toothpaste meant for children under the age of two.
  • The appropriate amount of toothpaste to use at this age is the size of a grain of rice.

  • Begin using a fluoride-containing toothpaste with ages 2-5 or even 6+ on the packaging for teeth cleaning, but make sure they don’t swallow the toothpaste.
  • Ensure that they spit out any extra toothpaste, but do not force them to rinse with water.
  • Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
  • Be courageous in your struggle with teeth cleaning – it is critical that they brush their teeth twice a day or tooth decay will set in!
  • You can also start using tooth floss at this age, or if two teeth come into contact. Place your child’s head on your knees and assist yourself with a flossette.

  • If possible, switch to adult toothpaste, making sure your child does not swallow it and thoroughly spits out any excess after brushing.
  • You can also begin to teach your child how to brush their teeth effectively on their own. That is, brushing with small back and forth, massaging motions, or circles, making sure to brush around the gumline both on the outside and inside of the teeth.
  • You will still need to clean and floss their teeth at these ages because they will not be able to do it perfectly until they are approximately 7 or 8 years old.

Kids are now old enough to clean and floss their own teeth! Maintain regular supervision and check-ins to verify that they are doing a good job!

Remember to take your children to the dentist every six months to confirm that they are brushing correctly and are cavity-free! We can even instruct them teeth cleaning routine and show them where they may improve by using plaque-disclosing tablets.

Here is brushing technique to follow

The proper teeth cleaning technique is to:

  • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.
  • Gently move the brush back and forth in short (tooth-wide) strokes.
  • Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.

Here is flossing technique to follow

  1. Wind: Wind 18 inches of floss around the middle or index finger of one hand, and a tiny amount around the middle or index finger of the other hand. (Using your middle finger frees up your index finger to manipulate floss.) It may appear to be an excessive amount, but it is only enough to maintain a clean section in place as you travel from tooth to tooth. Leave a one- to two-inch spacing between your thumbs and index fingers. Use your thumbs to guide floss between top teeth.
  2. Guide: Maintain a one-to-two-inch strand of floss tight between your fingers. Use your index fingers to guide floss between lower tooth contacts.
  3. Glide: Using a zig-zag motion, gently move floss between the teeth. Take care not to have the floss break or “pop” between your teeth. Contour the floss around the side of the tooth, forming a C shape as you wrap it around the teeth.
  4. Slide: Floss against the tooth surface and under the gum line, being sure to floss the back side of each tooth. Unroll a fresh length of floss from one hand’s finger while rolling the old floss onto the other hand’s finger as you proceed from one tooth to the next. Use your thumb as a guide.
